For the third year in a row, the MSLGROUP Research & Insights Group, with invaluable help from BusinessWire, has analyzed the headlines of more than 11,000 news releases, and the results are in.

Writing for SEO is not just a matter of keyword optimization and social engagement. PR professionals ignore these guidelines far too often, resulting in incomplete display of headlines, or outright exclusion from search results.

Our research has shown that:

  • Only 21% of all news releases have headlines with the ideal 65 characters or fewer (an increase of just 1.5% over last year)
  • 21% of news releases are ignored by Google News completely!
  • For the first time ever, the majority of release headlines are now under 100 characters
